You do something, visit someplace, see something, or buy something. The experience is not what you expected -- it may have been surprising, or frustrating, or puzzling. So you want to understand. Sometimes the question is Who? Sometimes How? Sometimes Why? You'd like to know more.

These days we all Google for answers. If that doesn't satisfy us, maybe we call people we think can clue us in, or do some research at the library, or hire a private detective. More likely we just let it go, not having the time or patience to pursue every mystery.

Sheddingsomelight.com is a small exercise in understanding. We decided to look at some topics that have come to our attention, gathering enough information to help explain them using only the public resources that all literate citizens have at their disposal. It also turns out to be a collaboration with dozens of other individuals and companies who have assembled some of the bits and pieces and made them available in magazines or newspapers or online.

And in the spirit of that collaboration, we invite contributions of information or guidance, as well as suggestions and criticisms to make our efforts more useful.
